Your Reputation Is Not Your’s To Defend

The scripture I am going to quote is one of the most misused by church people when they act stupid and others call them out on it.

God will bless you when people insult you, mistreat you, and tell all kinds of evil lies about you because of me. Be happy and excited! You will have a great reward in heaven. People did these same things to the prophets who lived long ago. (Matthew 5: 11-12)

While this verse is misused by people doing things that don’t glorify Christ it should be a welcome verse when you are attacked just for your faith.  Be proud of who you are and rest solely in Jesus for who he is and what he has done for you.  When you are truly doing what God has called you to do is when you will be talked about and scorned.  When you operate in the truth and with love people will be offended and set off, but you have to do what you are called to do.

We will never know the persecution in America that the early Christians faced.  We will never know the persecution in America that many Christians face around the world.  What we will face is anger in our churches when we reach out and love people of other faiths or gays in our community.  We will be talked about when we don’t serve on boards or committees because we are really sharing the gospel and not just talking about it.  We will be lied about when we do what God is calling us to do, but remember Jesus will defend your reputation, and you will never have to.
